Assiut University is a public university in Asyut, Egypt. The University was established in 1957 to encourage research, education and community services in Upper Egypt. Languages of Instruction are Arabic and English. Admission requirements for the undergraduate level are the Egyptian Secondary School certificate or its equivalent, student's place of residence and the regulating decrees of the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Universities. The university provides over 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Art, Engineering, Medicine, Science, Technology and many others. Many academic centers are also affiliated to AU to serve specific, goal-directed functions. Large number of students and staff members are accommodated within the university campus. Two other universities emerged from Assiut University's flagship campus and are now independent universities: El-Minia University and South Valley University.
In 1949 the National Ministry of Education applied the project of constucting an University in Upper Egypt on the occasion of the centenary of the death of Mohammed Ali Pasha the great wali of Egypt , the proposed name of the University was "University of Mohammed Ali" ,The cabinet approved the project and issued by Decree Law No. 156 of 1949. and the opening was set to be in four to seven years. However, the project did not come into actual existence only after the July Revolution, which was in late 1955 the project was studied for its implementation, and already started to study in the Faculties of Science and Engineering in October 1957. Assiut University was established as the first university in Upper Egypt to prepare highly qualified graduates with the basic specialized academic knowledge and training expertise on the various necessary skills. Besides, the university offers an abundance of programs complying with the contemporary world changes.
The emblem of Assiut University (AU) is embodied in a shield depicting the disc of Akhenaten's sun to symbolize the ancient Egyptian era. Rays of the sun flow on the university's name which is written in Kufic letters to denote Arabian epoch. These rays extend from the sun disc in the form of human hands offering benevolence and welfare. The letters of the university's name are soaring high towards sunlight.
The university campus is located in the heart of Assiut City , in Upper Egypt . the area of the University campus is more than 500,000 acres as an urban campus . in addition to the faculties studying building there are a sports complex containing a swimming pool , indoor games arena ,an Olympic style stadium and squash arenas ,also there are main library and considered one of the biggest libraries in all Egyptian Universities.
Assiut Kasr Al-Aini University Hospital is one of the large educational and treatment hospitals in Egypt and Arab countries. It provides medical service to vast areas across Upper Egypt, assuring leadership in public service, There is no doubt that opening of this major hospital in 1987 had a great effect on accelerating its future development and progress which now accommodate about three thousands beds, these beds 92% are charge- free beds and 8% paid covered by health insurance with the governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Income is directed for covering the treatment needs of the poor and disabled patients.
The University hospital includes the main general hospital, women health hospital, and paediatrics hospital. In addition to that there are also four specialized hospitals under construction which will cover the future needs in the fields of urology, neurology, cardiac and liver diseases according to a scientifically planned strategy.
The outpatient clinics serve about one million patients a year from all over Upper Egypt, from Bani suef at north, to Aswan, Halaeb and Shalateen at south; In addition to patients from New valley and Red Sea governorates.
Assiut University is home to sixteen faculties.[3] The medium of teaching at the university; lectures, exams, and tuition, are primarily in English language, with Arabic being used mainly to facilitate student understanding.
Faculty of Science has been characterized by a unique teaching system: the common department system. Such system makes the faculty responsible for teaching all courses of the basic sciences to undergraduate as well as to graduate students of different faculties of the university. So, strong, active, top-quality six scientific departments translate the mission and strategies of the Faculty of Science. The Faculty was founded as the first faculty (with science faculty) in the University,the faculty also has been accredited from the national authority for quality assurance and accreditation of education as the first and only faculty of Engineering all over Egypt . the faculty have five departments for governmental study ( Mechanical - Civil - Electrical - Mining - Architecture ) and two other departments for non-governmental study programs (Interior design - Mechatronics Engineering). Assiut faculty of medicine was founded by the presidential decree no 1295 in july 1960.The pharmacy departments were added to the faculty as a nucleus to the faculty of pharmacy.The study started in 1960 with 15 departments,17 staff members and 146 students.now the faculty includes 31 departments,652 staff members ,3765 students. The Faculty of Pharmacy was established in 1960 as Pharmaceutical Departments affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine then became independent at 1967. It was the third Faculty of Pharmacy to be established in Egypt after Cairo and Alexandria Faculties of Pharmacy. It is the fifth Faculty to be established in Assiut University. The first group of students were awarded the degree of B. Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at 1965/1966 (29 graduates). Between 1965 and 2010, the Faculty of Pharmacy has awarded the degree of B. Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences to 11634 graduates. The study in "Clinical Pharmacy" program began 2006/2007 with 205 students. The highly-qualified graduates are distributed around Egypt, the Arabic region and the world occupying many unique professional positions in a broad spectrum of institutes, agencies and universities. The purpose of the faculty of veterinary medicine is to increase the public awareness of general animal health issues and importance of the veterinary medicine for the maintenance of the animal wealth in Egypt. The faculty also aims to enhance the scientific research to address the various veterinary field problems and to contribute in improvement of animal wealth and guarantee the self-sufficiency in meat and milk production. Besides, the faculty provides access to sources of advanced knowledge and cultures in order to provide community with cadres of qualified human resources to comply with the demands of the labor market. In 1957, the Ministry of Education two colleges, one of male teachers and the other for female teachers located at Minia Governorate with the purpose of preparing male and female teachers majoring in science, math, English, and French for both the middle and secondary school more... In 1961, the two colleges belonged to the Ministry of Higher Education until 1966 when they started to belong to Assiut University under the name of College of Teachers under the Presidential Bill No. 3123 issued in August 1966 and the College of Teacher in Minia became a branch of the College of Teachers in Assiut. In 1970, the Supreme Council of Egyptian Universities decided to change the name of the College of Teachers at Assiut University into the College of Education located at Al Gomhuria Street (now College of Social Work) The first group graduating from the College of Education was 70 male and female teachers in the school year 1960/1961. The College moved to its new location at the Assiut University campus from 1992 onwards. Many departments were established in the college in addition to the establishment of the Basic Education and Child Education sections. New laboratories and rooms were established such as the Learning Resources Center in the four academic departments of the college , Quality Assurance Unit, Advanced Digital Computer Labs, internet classrooms, Center of the Colleges of Education Development, Developing the Courses of Professional Diploma to deal with the Deaf and Mute and Blind Unit, Center of the Identification of Gifted Students. Faculty of Nursing at Assiut University aims at improving health care services and fulfilling the needs of the community. Besides, it aims at being active and reactive to the continuous scientific and technical advancements in the field of nursing. These aims are to be achieved through academic and nursing programs that should meet national and international standards in order to set scientifically and practically qualified nurses, able to compete in the labor market. Assiut University student library is the chief student library of the University. It seeks to acquire and service all forms of recorded information in selected fields pertinent to the programs of the University. The University student library is located in the ground floor of the administration building of the University. It contains a comprehensive collection of reference materials appropriate to a University library. The reading materials support the curricular needs of students and faculty members and are available to library users on the campus. Computer facilities are also housed in the library providing easy access for Assiut University students. Internet-based literature searches are available to aid in the enhancement of University education. With its content of reference materials, the University Student library can provide sound achievement in various fields.[4]
The university issues thirteen journals most important of them is "Bulletin of Faculty of Science",[5] "Bulletin of Pharmaceutical Sciences"[6] and the "Journal of Engineering Sciences".[7]
